Overview

This experimental project was part of the Visual Music workshop conducted under the Open Electives course at NID. We explored the possible relations between music and visual arts and their implementation in static or time based mediums.

The musical piece that I worked with was picked from the song Paris by Else. We started by breaking down the initial elements such as sound, rhythm, melody and harmony from our chosen piece and then tried to combine it with compelling visuals based on compositional principles of the piece.

Since there was no restriction of medium, I decided to expand my skillsets and try something I never had - generating audio sensitive visuals through code. At the end of this workshop we had two outcomes - one which was analytical (objective) and one which was poetic (subjective). The analytical outcome was part of an exhibition that showcased student work at the end of the course.

This project introduced me to the world of motion graphics - and I fell head over heels in love. There was something magical about combining two of the most expressive mediums that people could experience, and that stuck with me ever since.

This project was practical and experimental in nature. The intent was to figure out answers to questions like - What are the relations between color, form, image and sound? What are the relations between visual and musical compositions? How can we construct a syntax in common for them?

To approach these questions I picked a musical piece that I had an unusually specific experience with. The image of how I visualized this song for the first time was lodged in my head, which is what I tried to show in the poetic outcome of my project. Through the visuals I have tried to induce in the viewer what I felt during that first time. The poetic outcome was made using Blender and Premiere Pro.
